GEO for holiday light installers: Google named three companies and the AI named five others

Google's map for "holiday light installation portland" shows three installers. I asked ChatGPT who to call for the same job and it named five, with phone numbers and two published prices, and none of the five are on Google's map. For a trade with no license board, the AI built its whole answer from the installers' own websites. Here is the evidence and the steps.

What Google showed

On September 6, 2026, Google's map for "holiday light installation portland" showed Total Light Design on 59 reviews, BrightWrx Holiday Lighting on 80, and Saint Nick's Christmas Lights on 141. All three were marked closed until Monday. Under two of them Google added a line it pulled from their sites: their website mentions professional christmas light installation. That line is Google reading the site to justify the listing.

What the AI answered

The same evening I asked ChatGPT who I could call to get my holiday lights installed in Portland, Oregon. It named five companies. PDX Christmas Lights, with a name to call and a $250 minimum quoted from the site. Clean Portland Services: installs, maintains, removes, and can store lights. PDX Holiday Lighting: custom roofline, tree wraps, commercial and residential, with the site saying most residential installs run about $500 to $2,500. Light Solutions LLC: Portland metro including Beaverton, Tigard, and Vancouver, seasonal and permanent. Gorilla Property Services: installation, maintenance, takedown, storage. Then it made a short list: start with PDX Christmas Lights or Clean Portland for a straightforward job, and Light Solutions for something more designed or permanent.

Set the two lists side by side. Google named three companies. The AI named five. Zero of the eight appear on both lists. The company with 141 reviews, the most on the map, is absent from the AI answer. The company the AI put first has a $250 minimum on its site and ranks fourth in Google's blue links. Winning both lists is the whole of my SEO, GEO, and AEO services, in one trade.

ChatGPT naming five Portland holiday light installers with phone numbers, a $250 minimum for one and a $500 to $2,500 range for another
ChatGPT, asked who to call for holiday lights in Portland, September 6, 2026. Five companies, two with prices quoted from their own sites, none of them in Google's map.

Why the lists have nothing in common

Google's map runs on the business profile: category, proximity, review count, and the hours. The AI never opened the map. It opened websites and read them for the facts a customer would want: who to call, what it costs, whether they take the lights down, whether they store them, and where they work. Every detail in the answer came from a company's own site. The minimum price, the residential range, the takedown and storage line, the list of suburbs.

In this trade the site is the record. A roofer has a CCB record and a BBB profile the AI can check. An electrician has a license and a permit history on BuildZoom. A holiday light installer has reviews and a website, and that is the whole record. The installer whose site states the price, the service, the takedown, and the area is the one the AI can describe, so it is the one the AI names. The installer whose site is a photo and a phone number is invisible to the machine writing the recommendation. The gutter cleaning answer was built the same way, from three company websites.

The season is decided in September

Christmas light installation near me averages 11,000 searches a month across the year, and the average hides the shape. Last year it ran 4,000 in August, 29,000 in September, 15,000 in October, 63,000 in November, and under 1,000 from January to July. A page needs time to settle, and the AI reads a change sooner than Google ranks it, so the pricing page and the booking window go up in August.

The installer-specific steps

The general checklist is in the post on getting ChatGPT to recommend your business. These are the parts the answer above was built from, in the order I would do them for a lighting company.

  • A price on the page. The AI quoted a $250 minimum from one site and a $500 to $2,500 residential range from another, and it recommended those two. The cost questions are 2,000 searches a month, two of them with an AI Overview. A starting price for a typical house answers Google, the AI, and the customer in one line. The pages an AI Overview quotes put the number in the first sentence.
  • Takedown and storage, in text. Three of the five were described by what happens in January: removes, stores, takedown. The customer wants to know, and the AI repeated it for every site that said it.
  • The service area by suburb. Light Solutions was named with Beaverton, Tigard, and Vancouver attached because its site lists them. The engine matches the customer's location to the words on the page.
  • A name and a number. The first company in the answer came with a first name to call or text. Nothing on the page is too small for the AI to repeat.
  • The booking window. Say when the calendar opens and when it closes.
  • Reviews at the install. Google's map is the other list, and it runs on reviews. Saint Nick's has the most reviews of the three, 141. Ask while the house is lit and the customer is standing on the lawn.

How to check it

Ask ChatGPT the question your customer asks: "who can I call to get my holiday lights installed, I'm in Portland, Oregon." Read what it says about each company and open the site it linked. If your company is named, check that every fact it quoted is current, because it will quote the old price as readily as the new one. If your company is absent, the sites it did quote are the template: a price, the takedown line, the suburbs, a name to call. The free consultation runs the prompt for your city in August, before the searches start.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO for holiday light installers?
Generative engine optimization is the work of being the installer an AI names when someone asks it for one. For this trade the answer is built almost entirely from your own website, because there is no license board or certification for the engine to check.
Why did the AI name none of the companies on Google's map?
The map runs on the business profile and the reviews. The AI reads websites for the facts a customer wants: price, takedown, storage, area, who to call. The five it named had those facts in text. A company can be first on the map and absent from the answer, and the Portland results show exactly that.
Should I publish my prices?
A minimum or a typical range is enough. The AI quoted both from the two companies it recommended first, and the cost questions are 2,000 searches a month. The company that publishes the number is the one the engine can describe.
When should a lighting company do this work?
August. The searches start in September and peak in November at 63,000. Google needs months to settle a page, and the AI reads a change sooner. The pricing page and the booking window go first.
Does this apply to the off-season services?
Yes. The same companies clean gutters, pressure wash, or install permanent lighting the rest of the year, and each service gets its own page on the same foundation. Light Solutions was named for permanent lighting because its site says it offers it.
