What happened when the AI was asked
On September 6, 2026, Google's map for "roofers portland" showed IBEX Roof, Flow Roofing, and HER Roofing, on 439, 429, and 79 reviews, with a sponsored listing paying for the slot above them. The same day, I asked ChatGPT "who is the best roofer in Portland, Oregon." It named Interstate Roofing.
Its reasons: consistent appearances across current local rankings, a very large review base, strong ratings, a long operating history, and solid credentials. It cited the BBB profile for A+ accreditation and 38 years in business, listed GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, and CertainTeed Five Star certifications, pointed to an Expertise listing, and quoted Birdeye at 4.8 from more than 900 reviews. As a runner-up it named Premier Pacific Roofing, citing the Oregon CCB license record and a reported ten-year workmanship warranty. It closed by telling the reader to get three bids and check the CCB.
Nothing about Google's map entered into it. The AI built the answer from records other people keep and from credentials written down where it could read them. Being on those records is the GEO half of my SEO, GEO, and AEO services.

What GEO means for a roofer
Generative engine optimization is the work of being the roofer an AI names when someone asks it for one. For roofing, the answer above shows two inputs that weigh more than they do in other trades. The five inputs every trade shares are the baseline.
The first is credentials. Manufacturer certifications were listed by name, and the CCB record and the workmanship warranty were the reasons given for the runner-up. Roofing is a trade where the customer is buying a warranty as much as a roof, and the engine reflected that.
The second is longevity. "In business for 38 years" and "long operating history" were cited as reasons. A company with 439 reviews holds the map. A 38-year-old company with a BBB record holds the AI answer. Both are real, and a roofer can work on both.

The roofing-specific steps
The general checklist is in the post on getting ChatGPT to recommend your business. These are the parts that matter more for a roofer. The cost page that Google's AI Overview quoted for roof replacement in Portland is the page to write alongside them.
- Certifications in text, on your site and on BBB. GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Malarkey, whichever programs you hold. Named in text on a page, and listed on the BBB profile the AI reads. The manufacturer's own installer directory is a third-party record that confirms it.
- The warranty, written down. Years, what it covers, and whether it is the manufacturer's or yours. The runner-up was named partly for a ten-year workmanship warranty the AI could find. If yours is longer and unwritten, it does not exist to the engine.
- A current CCB record under the right name. The answer told the reader to verify with the Oregon CCB and quoted the board's own warning that anyone can pretend to be a contractor. The record has to match the business name on your site and your listings exactly.
- Seasonal and emergency pages. Moss removal, emergency leak repair, storm damage. "Emergency roof repair portland" has a difficulty of zero and a $70 click. "Moss removal portland" is 500 searches a month. A page for each gives the AI something specific to name you for when the question is specific.
- A page per roofing type and per city. Asphalt, metal, cedar, flat. Beaverton, Gresham, Lake Oswego, Vancouver. "Metal roofing portland" and "roofing contractors vancouver wa" are open searches, and the AI asked for a metal roofer in Beaverton needs a page that says you do that there.
- Reviews that mention the roof. Ask after every completed job and ask for the specifics: the roof type, the neighborhood, how long it took. The aggregators the AI cited, Birdeye and Expertise, are reading the same reviews Google shows, so one habit feeds both.
How to check it
Ten prompts a Portland homeowner would ask, run monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Mode from a signed-out browser. The captures on this site so far are from ChatGPT. For roofing, include a prompt about warranties, one about a specific material, one about an emergency leak, and one for each city you work in. Record who was named and what was cited. The cited column is your work order, and in Portland today it reads BBB, the CCB, Birdeye, and Expertise. The free consultation runs the roofing prompts for your city and hands you that column.
Frequently asked questions
- What is GEO for roofers?
- Generative engine optimization for a roofing company: the work of being the roofer an AI names when someone asks it for one. It is built from third-party records, certifications and warranties written down where an engine can read them, and specific service and area pages.
- Why did ChatGPT name a roofer that is not on Google's map?
- Because it does not read the map. It named the roofer it could verify from the BBB, a review aggregator, and the state license board, with certifications and a long operating history it could cite. Map position was not among its reasons.
- Do manufacturer certifications help with AI recommendations?
- In the Portland answer they were listed by name as a reason. They work when they are written in text on your site and confirmed by the manufacturer's installer directory, which is a third-party record the engine can check.
- How long does GEO take for a roofer?
- Most results show after three to six months, the same as the rest of the search work. The records the AI reads update on their own schedules, and I measure monthly with a fixed prompt list so the movement is visible before the calls are.
